STEM INITIATIVE FOR GIRLS
STEM Initiative for Girls provides after school tutoring for small classes of girls in every member school. Every girl is provided with all necessary supplies including textbooks, notebooks, calculators and writing materials. The classes are also decorated with mathematical posters to support the class with visual learning.
The class is led by two teachers, a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. While the lead teacher teaches, the assistant teacher helps ensure the girls are able to complete their class assignments on time, lending support as needed. The class is interactive. The girls are encouraged to ask questions.
Girls are assessed by STEM before being admitted into the program.
The STEM board of trustees work with the school to recruit the teachers. In addition to the teachers, the program is supported by the following:
A Board of Trustee member who acts as the program director (she oversees the program, stays closely in touch with the member schools, and provides a monthly update to all members).
A program coordinator who monitors the classes and ensures classes are held as and when due, monitors student attendance, notifies the program director of any school updates which might affect the program, ensures availability of class supplies, and communicates with the school authorities where necessary.
All major decisions are communicated with the school principals. Communications with parents are discussed with the principals to ensure there is no misrepresentation that could affect the school or its operations.
